Rural Development offers Home Repair Loans and Grants

The USDA - Rural Development department offers Home Repair Loans and Grants to very-low-income homeowners to repair, improve, or modernize their homes or provides grants to elderly very-low-income homeowners to remove health and safety hazards.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) – Rural Development department offers Single Family Housing Repair Loans & Grants. Also known as  the Section 504 Home Repair program, this provides loans to very-low-income homeowners to repair, improve,
or modernize their homes or provides grants to elderly very-low-income homeowners to remove health and safety hazards.

Loans of up to $20,000 are available at 1 percent interest and can be paid over 20 years. Loans may be used to repair, improve, or modernize
homes or to remove health and safety hazards. To be eligible for this program, applicants must be able to show proof of ownership and use the home as their primary residence.

Grants of up to $7,500 are available to homeowners who are 62 year old or older. Grant funds can only be used to pay for repairs and improvements to remove health and safety hazards. These improvements can be to repair or replace a roof, winterizing, purchase or repair heating systems, and water and sewage connect fees, and similar uses.

If you qualify, you can also combine a loan of $20,000 with a grant of $7,500 for up to $27,500 in assistance.
